The Ultimate Book Battle

We are heading into our 3rd annual reading compeitition, "The Ultimate Book Battle" with Butterfield Canyon Elementary and this year Silver Crest Elementary is joining the competition.   The school with the most minutes read will receive a trophy and a special school assembly!

The competition is going to be fierce and we want to keep the trophy at Foothills, so please encourage your student to READ, READ, READ as much as possible in the two weeks of competition.  The class that reads the most will receive a game and ice cream party!

Please record the number of minutes your child reads each night independently at home on the "Ultimate Book Battle Calendar" and return it by the date due with a parent signature so the minutes will be counted toward our school.    In order to ensure a fair and competitive atmosphere, only minutes recorded on the "Ultimate Book Battle Calendar" will be counted.

Grab a book and let the reading begin!

Food Drive

It is time again for the Foothills Annual Food Drive.

The halls are filling up with generous donotions, but we would like to encourage everyone to participate.  The student council set a goal of 10,000 food items and we would like to meet and exceed that goal.   

Please bring a canned or non-parishable food item to school to donate to our food drive!

Brrrr it's cold - Inclement Weather Guidelines

PLEASE DRESS YOUR STUDENTS FOR THE WEATHER!

It has been deteremined by the School Community Council that students will be brought in the building under the following weather conditions:

* Temperature is below 20 degrees
* Wind chill factor causes extreme low temperature
* Air quality is poor
* Rain
* Other hazardous conditions such as high winds, lightening or other   conditions deemed hazardous by the principal.

Recess will be cancelled in case of inclement weather conditions or extreme cold.

Great Brain Independent Study Project

Foothills Elementary announced the implementation of the Great Brain Independent Study Project for students.  Students become Great Brains by choosing a topic to research in-depth, using a variety of sources and keeping careful records.  The child then plans and makes a presentation before an audience.

Great Brain is more intensive than regularly assigned schoolwork and may be on any subject that a student finds interesting regardless of grade core curriculum.  A strict set of guidelines and steps must be followed to accomplish the project.  The informatin is available through the office or through Mrs. Brown.  These projects are completed at home and then a presentation is scheduled with Mrs. Brown to share the information with classmates. 

This is a great way to keep your brains working while off during the winter break!

Halloween Parade & Party - Reminder

Halloween Parade starts at 9 a.m.

The 4th grade will be having a short program for the parents right after the costume parade, so we aren't able to give you an exact time because it will depend on how long the parade takes.

After the program, we will be having our class party!

We could used some parent volunteers to help out with the party if your available please contact Heather Jensen or Mrs. Brown!

Reflection Entries are DUE!!

Just a reminder to Parents and Students that a week from this Friday all the entries for the reflections contest are due to office.

They must be turned into the office on Friday, OCT. 23rd!

Reflections Contest: "Beauty is..."

Entries are due for all tracks on
October 23rd.

Turn entries into the front office or to your teacher.
Make sure you put a pepperoni on your class pizza for every entry you turn in and get the prize from PTA (your teachers will have these)
Theme: 'Beauty is...'
Remember!!!

Each student may turn in one entry in each of the eight categories. Entries are the work of only one student. Work must be the original work of the student. (Music must be original composition, dance must be original dance moves.) Entry forms must be completely filled out and signed by a parent. Follow the rules. The judging is very strict. We don't want to disqualify anyone. Judging is based on three criteria: Creativity, Interpretation of Theme, Artistic Merit.

Prizes!!

Every student will get a treat for entering, and a ribbon for participating. Advancing entries will win a gift card!

What is Reflections? Here is some information from the Utahpta.org site:
Reflections is an annual program that encourages students' artistic talents. For more than 30 years, the Reflections program has invited children (preschool-grade 12) to create and submit works of art. Every year in Utah we have about 60,000 students enter the Reflections program. We have expanded the original categories of Music, Photography, Visual Arts and Literature to include 4 additional categories, including Dance, Theatre, 3D and Film and Video. This is a wonderful program for our students. The excitement and enthusiasm that the Reflections arts recognition program generates for children, parents, schools, and communities is unmatched. The Reflections program offers your PTA an opportunity to showcase your school and students and demonstrate the importance of a quality arts education. In addition, the Reflections program offers students the opportunity to express themselves and receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts.
